In operation, what counts is what works in a measurable way: ensuring comfort, protecting systems and using energy efficiently – in a way that is traceable, reproducible and sustainable. This is precisely where transparency becomes a decisive factor for success. This does not simply mean a visually appealing dashboard, but the ability to visualise system statuses, trends and deviations in such a way that they lead to well-founded, technical decisions. This results in maximum efficiency.

Typical questions encountered in practice include:

Where is the system starting up unnecessarily early?

Where do heating and cooling run simultaneously?

Where are minimum flow rates consistently set too high?

Without reliable data, these questions remain mere speculation. With structured data collection, they can be resolved.

DDC as the technical foundation for genuine transparency and efficiency

This is based on Direct Digital Control (DDC). It continuously records relevant parameters such as temperature, humidity, pressure and air flow rate, processes them in real time and stores trend data over hours, days and weeks. It is only this level of detail that makes it possible to clearly identify cause-and-effect relationships.

Examples from the workplace:

A load jump in the morning is no mystery; it is simply the result of starting the engine too early.

A persistently high supply air temperature turns out to be the result of overly aggressive controller settings.

Frequent changes in the manipulated variable indicate controller hunting and unnecessary wear.

Transparency replaces gut instinct with reliable facts – and is therefore essential for sustained efficiency.

From raw data to decisions: combining trends, alerts and KPIs effectively

Transparency is not achieved by having as many data points as possible, but through structure and relevance. A well-defined DDC strategy establishes the following as early as the planning and commissioning phase:

What’s trending?

At what intervals?

Over what period?

The following, for example, have proven their worth:

5-minute trends for temperatures and flow rates to assess control quality

15-minute trends for energy meters for analysing consumption and load profiles

Intelligent alarm management is equally crucial: prioritisation rather than a flood of alarms, well-defined hysteresis thresholds and clear escalation procedures ensure that relevant deviations are actually addressed.

It is only through KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that efficiency can be compared:

SFP values assess fan efficiency

COP and EER indicate the efficiency of generators

kWh per floor area, temperature deviation times or operating hours per mode provide clarity on comfort and energy consumption

The key link: trends explain alerts – alerts create a sense of urgency – KPIs measure success.

Typical practical ways to improve efficiency

When combined effectively, data can quickly lead to measurable results:

Demand-controlled ventilation
By analysing CO₂ levels, occupancy times and air flow rates together, it is often possible to reduce the minimum air flow rate or delay the start-up time – which has a direct impact on fan power consumption and heating and cooling requirements.

Pressure Setpoint Reset
If damper or valve positions are systematically adjusted and the pressure is tailored to actual demand, pressure losses are significantly reduced without compromising comfort.

Dead zones between heating and cooling
A clearly defined and documented temperature range prevents costly conflicts between energy flows.

These measures are well established in technical terms – however, their success depends entirely on a transparent data foundation.

Sustainable efficiency: from monitoring to continuous optimisation

The greatest added value is realised in the long term. Those who make serious use of trend histories establish a continuous improvement process. Typical patterns become apparent:

gradual decline in heat recovery efficiency

repeated exceedances of filter limit values

drifting sensors or unstable control parameters

Instead of reactive troubleshooting, this leads to proactive operation: condition-based maintenance, parameter-driven optimisation of schedules and targeted adjustments – based on data, not guesswork.

At the same time, transparency enhances documentation and compliance: comfort limits can be verified, alarm processes documented, and cost-saving measures quantified. This improves operational safety, simplifies audits and builds trust among users, operators and management.

Conclusion

Transparency is the operating system of energy efficiency.
Only when trends, alerts and KPIs are clearly defined and consistently applied can energy consumption be reduced in the long term – without compromising on comfort. DDC provides the data; structure makes it actionable; and routines ensure success. In this way, automation transforms into a demonstrably efficient smart building that remains stable, scalable and consistently high-performing.

If you’re interested in our DDCs, you can find our product range here.

In practice, what counts is what works: ensuring comfort, protecting systems and using energy efficiently – sustainably and transparently.

[592

post-11836","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-2
["GET
